All classes are actively involved in a sporting program each week. This program may include athletics, games, dancing and coordination skills, depending on the season.

St John's has three major sporting carnivals each year at a school level: Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics.  The children are placed in one of four houses and are actively involved in friendly competitions at the carnivals.  These carnivals also serve as a selection process for Wollongong Diocesan teams.

Parental help is required at carnivals and very much appreciated.

Gala days in Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Cricket, Rugby League and Australian Rules are held each year.  These carnivals are not for selection purposes but rather to encourage participation and social interaction with other schools around the diocese.

Students who have achieved representative levels outside of school, are also invited to attend trials for positions in Wollongong Diocese representative teams for the following Summer and Winter sports: Basketball, Tennis, Cricket, Touch Football, Softball, Soccer, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Hockey, Netball and Australian Rules. These trials are held annually and link to the Mackillop selection trials.

For those students competing beyond school events, the representative pathway is as follows:

School-Based Carnivals/Trials > Diocesan Carnivals/Trials > NSW Mackillop Carnivals/Trials > NSW PSSA State Carnivals > Australian Championships (Sport Australia)
